Phil Mauro and George Chan are the 2019 Safety Persons of the Year!

The DCA Safety/Risk Management Committee informed Hallen that the team of Phil Mauro and George Chan are the 2019 Safety Persons of the Year!  This award is normally presented at the DCA Safety Congress, but due to COVID-19 concerns, the 2020 Safety Congress was unfortunately canceled. On 6/19/2020 and on behalf of the DCA, Phil and George were awarded a plaque and a check for their contribution towards safety and wellbeing at Hallen.

Phil collaborated with Hallen Construction welder, Kin Chan (George), and developed the Control Retrieval Hook (CRH). The CRH is a long fiberglass rod (approximately 7’ long) with a fabricated hook specifically designed for pushing, pulling, and maintaining control of steel plates. The CRH proved more effective compared to the Safe-T-Stick and utilization by the field workers increased.

Phil was also instrumental in developing a best practices document and a class aimed at training individuals working on the boom truck. The document and class are called “Boom Truck Safety Best Practices”. Phil assists as a trainer including 76 student-hours of teaching time. The training includes a classroom portion with immediate field training facilitated in part by Phil. The two-hour class is comprehensive and includes a CRH demonstration.

We could not be prouder of Phil and George’s accomplishments. This is another fine example of our employees taking the initiative and going above and beyond: Hallen once again setting the standard.
