Our History

Founded by Maurice Hallen in 1927 as Hallen Welding Service, the Hallen Construction Company, Inc., operated for many years initially as a welding company. When engineer Arthur Poole joined the business in the 1940’s, after serving in the U.S. Navy, he helped the company expand into related fields. Mr. Poole subsequently purchased the company from Mr. Hallen in 1951, and since that time, Hallen Construction has been managed by the Poole family.

Hallen’s present chairman, Thomas Poole, joined the business in 1964 following his graduation from Hobart College and service in the Navy. Continuing to uphold the proud family tradition, Thomas’ son, Shepard Poole, is the current president and CEO. Shepard originally began as a full-time employee at Hallen after his graduation from Hobart in 1991.

For more than 90 years, Hallen’s management has vastly expanded the size and scope of their work performed to include natural gas, steam, petroleum, sewer and water pipelines, electric conduits, telecommunications, site work and station work.

As Hallen continues to innovate and rebuild the infrastructure of the tri-state area, the company has earned its reputation as the trusted major distribution contractor of choice for the New York metropolitan area’s principal utility providers National Grid and Con Edison. Hallen is also proud to be the preferred supplier for numerous pipeline companies, private sector companies and public sector agencies.
